Talmud, Tractate Shekalim, Chapter 8, Mishnah 1:

"All the spittle found in Jerusalem is pure, except for that in the Upper Market, the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yosei says, during the rest of the year, that in the middle is impure and that at the sides is pure. And at the time of the festival, that in the middle is pure and that at the sides is impure, because they are fewer and move to the sides."

In the spirit of what is said in Tractate Shabbat, page 89:

"Did Rav Pappa and Rav Huna the son of Rav Joshua delve into Aggadah [storytelling and non-legal discussions in the Talmud]? For Rav Chisda and Rabba the son of Rav Huna both said: Why was it called Mount Sinai? Because it is the mountain from which hatred descended to the nations of the world, for not accepting the Torah."

The Torah was given at Sinai, from where hatred descended into the world towards all the nations, because when holiness appears in a place, immediately there is embarrassment from this appearance. There are two directions one can take: one is to be angry for not having merited to be pure, and the other is to pray and hope to join this circle, the circle of life.
